SFWA TO HOLD FIRST ANNUAL “SAVOR THE FLAVOR” TASTING
January, 2008

For the first time since the repeal of prohibition, dessert wine enthusiasts will have the exclusive opportunity to taste some of California’s greatest sweet and fortified wines. Conducted by the Sweet and Fortified Wine Association (SFWA), the first annual “Savor the Flavor” tasting will be held in the Lodi Wine and Visitors Center on Saturday February 23 from 4 to 7 p.m.

“Dessert style wines have been gaining in popularity with consumers and California is crafting some really excellent sweet and fortified wines,” said SFWA President Peter Prager. “As sweet and fortified wine producers, we want consumers to appreciate the wide range of flavors that make our wines so delightfully versatile.”

Recent U. S. wine sales indicate that dessert wines now account for 7.5 percent of all
U. S. wine shipments. Growth in dessert wine sales has increased 61 percent in the last five years.

The Sweet and Fortified Wine Association (SFWA) is a non-profit organization of vintners, growers, producers, distributors, retailers and consumers whose Mission is the education and creation of awareness within the wine drinking public. “We believe that Americans are on the brink of rediscovering sweet and fortified dessert-style wines so we want consumers to have the opportunity to taste a variety of these remarkable wines.” Prager said.

The “Savor the Flavor” tasting is open to public for a fee of $25 which includes unlimited tasting accompanied by “finger foods” specially selected to showcase the versatility of sweet and fortified wines. Recipes and information on California sweet and fortified wines will also be available from participating producers. Event and ticket information can be obtained on the Sweet and Fortified Wine Association web site at www.sweetandfortifiedwine.org, or by e-mail at sweetandfortified@sbcglobal.net.
